White Wine

White Wine by Matanzas Creek from Sonoma County, California. Winemaker Fran?ois Cordesse's passion for Sauvignon Blanc is evident in the sophisticated, yet spirited, nature of this 2006 vintage wine. Comprised of primarily Sauvignon Blanc, this blend also includes 13% Sauvignon Musque, a clonal cousin to Sauvignon Blanc that balances the wine's acidity, strengthens the mid-palate and provides a longer finish. Estate-owned vineyards in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley and Knights Valley are the primary source of this wine's Sauvignon Blanc fruit, while Sonoma County's Knights Valley is the source of the Sauvignon Musque fruit. The translucent, pale straw color of this wine is followed by a fresh bouquet of pink grapefruit and melon. Emulating the nose, the palate of crisp citrus and melon flavor carries a hint of dry white herb, and is accompanied by a soft, round mouthfeel. This supple quality distinguishes Fran?ois' wine from many of the popular green, grassy-style Sauvignon Blancs, and is achieved by fermenting 21% of the final blend in French oak barrels.

White Wine by Wairau River from Marlborough, New Zealand. Established in 1978, the Rose family estate vineyards are situated on the banks of the Wairau River. Low crops and ripe fruit produce wine that has become renowned for exhibiting intense fruit characteristics and classical elegance. The philosophy that we pursue has always been one of elegance and fruit power with the foundation of the style being drinkability. We put a lot of store in the selection of flavors in the vineyard, subsequent small batch vintning and the final touches of the marriage are created at the blending table. Fleshy and ripe, with very good intensity to guava, pink grapefruit, grass and wet stone flavors. Tart lime juice acidity streamlines the fruit through a minerally finish. 90 Points Wine Spectator

White Wine by Au Bon Climat from Central Coast, California. The 2006, like the '05, is a truly alternative style of California white wine. The wine has not been compromised in quality at any step in its production. Low yielding, high quality vineyards (Bien Nacido, Rancho Vinedo, and Los Alamos) are hand-pruned, leaf thinned by hand, sustainably farmed, and hand picked. The grapes are whole cluster pressed, unsettled (a Burgundian tradition, like the weather), straight to Francois Freres small barrel for primary fermentation and malo-lactic, topped once a week by hand, sur lie, and bottled after a careful fining and no filtration. All of the French wood is neutral. This wine is fruit driven, lees enhanced, texturally sophisticated, balanced, bright, complex, and concentrated from yields under 3 ton per acre. Remember when Chardonnay had stone fruit (not tropical), firm acidity, brightness, earthiness, minerality, and no vestige of heaviness? Au Bon Climat certainly does! Here is your alternative. Chardonnay is not an aromatic variety, it needs wood and lees, but can be vinified in an elegant, fresh, and food friendly fashion.

White Wine by Lake Sonoma from Russian River, California. The grapes for this wine were whole cluster pressed to keep harsh phenolic compounds at a low level. After a short settling period, the clear juice was racked to French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine was aged on the fermentation lees for five months with regular stirring to re-suspend the lees and make a rounder, more complex wine. Flavors of apple and pears complement the soft vanilla oak profile and creme brulee-like finish. This Chardonnay pairs readily with a variety of foods including fresh fruit, aged cheeses, green salads, lighter pasta, poultry, pork and seafood.

White Wine by Wolfgang from Austria, European. Vinted at Wolfgang's award-winning wine estates on the shores of the Neusiedlersee in the heart of Austria's Burgenland province, Concerto Gruner-Veltliner (or Gru-Vee) is a perfect example of Austria's best-loved white wine varietal. Neither sweet nor exceedingly dry, Gruner Veltliner wines are by far Austria's most popular whites; as a result, nearly all of the grape's annual yield is consumed domestically in Austria. The shoreline of middle Europe's only steppe lake provides an ideal climate for Wolfgang's cultivation of these powerful wines. Concerto is an extraordinary wine, standing apart even from its heralded Gruner Veltliner peers. This Gru-Vee is pressed from sweet, vine-ripened GV grapes hand-selected for their rich character and potential to produce a complex, explosive wine. Concerto is lean and tight, characterized by racy fruit flavors, with a slightly mineral undercurrent and a full, expansive finish. Like other Gru-Vees, Concerto is extremely versatile and pairs well with nearly all entrees. This wine is particularly outstanding served with grilled or roasted red meats, fish, and poultry.

White Wine by Valley of the Moon from Sonoma County, California. This traditional Alsatian-style wine is a blend of grapes from vineyards that are located in the Russian River Valley and the Southern Sonoma Valley. Both viticultural areas have deep alluvial soil and a cool climate due to the moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean and the San Pablo Bay. These cool microclimates are responsible for preserving the crisp acidity and fresh fruit character of the wine. Aromas of honeysuckle, pear and lime are accented with a hint of hazelnut. Rich and complex tropical and citrus fruit flavors lead to a creamy finish balanced with crisp green apple tartness. This perfectly balanced Pinot Blanc pairs well with seafood, shellfish (particularly oysters), poultry, salads, fruits, light pastas and mild cheeses.
