White Wine by Wolfgang from Austria, European. Vinted at Wolfgang's award-winning wine estates on the shores of the Neusiedlersee in the heart of Austria's Burgenland province, Vienna Gruner-Veltliner (or Gru-Vee) Wine is a perfect example of Austria's best-loved white wine varietal. Neither sweet nor exceedingly dry, Gruner Veltliner wines are by far Austria's most popular whites; as a result, nearly all of the grape's annual yield is consumed domestically in Austria. The shoreline of middle Europe's only steppe lake provides an ideal climate for Wolfgang's cultivation of these powerful wines. Vienna is made with only the finest hand-selected grapes from a single Holle (warm weather) vineyard. The wine is aged for six months in new oak barrels to achieve the famous taste upon which Wolfgang has built its reputation. Like other Gru-Vees, Vienna is extremely versatile and pairs well with nearly all entrees. This wine is particularly outstanding served with grilled or roasted red meats, fish, and poultry.

White Wine by Girard from Napa Valley, California. The cooling effect of the marine layer fog at the Western reaches of the Russian River Valley provides excellent growing conditions for Chardonnay grapes. Various vineyards within Dutton Ranch are the primary fruit source for Girard's Chardonnay, with additional fruit coming from La Porte Cochere vineyard. The cooler weather yields higher grape acidity at harvest which helps form the base of Girard's trademark style of bright, clean and non-buttery Chardonnay. The 2006 Russian River Chardonnay exhibits wonderful brightness, clarity and light weight on the palate. The crispness and minerality of the wine makes it a lovely food companion but you will find it to be quite enjoyable on its own. Superb peach and melon aromas with refreshing citrus flavors are accented with hints of toasted nuts and a subtle, rich texture from the sur lies aging.

White Wine by Henschke from Barossa Valley, Australia. Riesling is the classic grape variety of Germany and one of the earliest varieties brought to South Australia. Cyril Henschke developed the Henschke reputation for premium Riesling wines as early as the 1950s, from the vineyard areas of Eden Valley, Keyneton and Springton. These dry, food-oriented wines are clean and crisp and have the ability to age into delicious marmalade on toast flavors, due to the cool climate of the Eden Valley region. This region provides excellent ripening conditions for the Riesling grape and has a unique track record of exceptional aging potential for the variety. The 2006 Julius Eden Valley Riesling is green gold in color. The nose is very lifted, floral and perfumed with rose petals, citrus blossom, lime/lemon zest, hints of slate and green peppercorns. The crisp, dry palate shows sweet fruit with rich flavors of lemon and lime, fresh acidity and excellent length.

White Wine by Grgich Hills from Napa Valley, California. The grapes were organically and biodynamically grown on Grgich Hills' cool American Canyon and Carneros vineyards, not far from the San Francisco Bay. In the glass, the wine offers a whiff of the tropics with kiwi, grapefruit, pineapple and a hint of minerality. On the tongue, this full-bodied wine has a crisp, refreshing texture and a long finish. This versatile, flavorful white wine is a great companion to a wide variety of food flavors and textures. In our recent tasting of older Sauvignon Blancs, no wine showed better with long-aging than the Grgich Hills 1983. These wines are always tight when young, and, at times, they make us wince at their bracing acidity. But, here is a wine that, while firm and only ready to drink for those who care for lean, brisk fruit as the first order of business, is so loaded with depth and promise that some of it should be put away for another day. Hide some in the cellar and let it pick up the roundness to lift its bracing flavors into full and rewarding balance. Connoisseurs' Guide

White Wine by Conundrum from California. The puzzle of Conundrum lies partly in guessing the range of grape varieties used, because its exact composition is never revealed! To create the layered flavors that go into the Conundrum blend, Sauvignon Blanc grapes were brought in from the Napa Valley, Muscat Canelli from Tulare County on the Central Coast, and Chardonnay and Viognier from Conundrum's vineyards in Monterey County. About one quarter of the wine lots were fermented in stainless steel in order to preserve their individual fruit characteristics. The remaining lots were fermented in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels for up to ten months. Conundrum 2006 exhibits soft tropical notes of guava and cherimoya, also peach and honeysuckle. The rich perfume is supported by concentrated and focused layers of peach and apricot nectar, pear and green melon with spicy vanilla notes. The creamy texture and balanced acidity carries through the palate for a long finish.

White Wine by Flora Springs from Napa Valley, California. Soliloquy is a most unusual wine. Its basis is the old Sauvignon Blanc vines that give it its unique character that is reminiscent of a garden of honeysuckle, peaches and spicy fruit. We have planted the Sauvignon Musque\\xA0\\xA3lone in the vineyard in anticipation of the decline of our old vines. Sauvignon Musque\\xA0\\xA5xhibits many of the same characteristics of the old Soliloquy vines but has the bonus of more power. My philosophy with Soliloquy is to deal with it as gently as possible. This means that I do not use any small barrels. Instead, I rely on sur lies aging to round out the wine and give it a silky mouthfeel.

White Wine by Chalone from Central Coast, California. The 2005 Pinot Blanc was whole-cluster pressed with no crushing or destemming of the grapes. The 21-day fermentation took place half in barrel with natural yeast, and half in stainless steel, inoculated with yeast. The wine was then aged for 9 months in French oak barrels to enhance the finish. Leaving the wine on the lees adds the signature hazelnut character typical of Chalone white wines and builds roundness and finish. This lovely wine offers bright flavors of crisp apple and brioche. It has a wonderful smooth and creamy texture, medium to full body and balanced acidity. Enjoy it on its own as an aperitif before a meal, or paired with chicken salad with tarragon and walnuts, poached dilled salmon or creamy pasta Alfredo.
